I’ve never said to people “welcome to the family” when they join Travelperk – I say “welcome to the team”. I have my family, you have yours, and we are a team working together on something cool and fun, but we are not a family – not everything needs to be the same thing. Despite that, I still made the mistake of thinking that I should shield the team from bad news but they’re not stupid, they want to know what’s going on and know what it means for their job and their family. So, eventually, I started being very transparent – if there’s a pandemic and lockdown, nobody knows what’s going on. We need to do something and that’s the reality – telling it to the team the way it is is much better, I didn’t know that’s the way you should do it before
